Oysters could reduce carbon emissions

Oysters could soon be the answer for companies wanting to offset their carbon emissions, a study has found.

Research by the University of South Australia suggests the oyster farming industry may have a new stream of revenue through selling carbon credits from the shellfish.

Oysters take in carbon from the ocean to help grow their shells, and their harvesting could be the making of a big business venture, particularly in areas where they grow thick and fast, the university claims.

If the oysters are grown in clear and nutritious water conditions, they grow faster and so would create more credits for offsetting pollution.
