Internet giant Google has introduced a new feature for its Android operating system that allows the software to act as a translation tool.
The “Goggles” application has been extended to allow the translation of English, French, Italian, German or Spanish after pictures are taken of words built into smartphones using the Android system.
“We are hard at work extending our recognition capabilities to other Latin-based languages,” Google software engineers Alessandro Bissacco and Avi Flamholz said on the company’s website.
“Our goal is to eventually read non-Latin languages (such as Chinese, Hindi and Arabic) as well.”
The Goggles application allows the Android system to make internet searches based on pictures, rather than pieces of text typed into a smartphone or computer system.
