Official Twitter Android app in the works

Just after social networking giant Twitter announced it would acquire iPhone app Tweetie and offer it as the official client for the site, its founders have announced an official Android app.

At the site’s Chirp conference for developers, founder Evan Williams announced the site would develop an Android app – but did not specific whether it would acquire an app or develop it themselves.

However, it seems likely the site will develop an app itself. When it acquired Atebits, the one-man company which made Tweetie, it also announced developer Loren Brichter would join its mobile development team. Brichter has been hailed as one of the most talented developers in the industry.

Twitter has also recently launched its own app for the BlackBerry, indicating the company is now becoming more serious about the mobile sector. Its reputation as a mobile social network has emerged as more users update their feeds “on the go”, and the company is keen to keep that name.
