Android gains ground against iPhone

The Android operating system is gaining awareness among handset users and is catching up on Apple’s iPhone, the results of a new survey from market research firm ChangeWave reveal.

Comparing two surveys taken in both September and December, the firm found the Android operating system gained ground as the preferred OS from 6% to 21% among people intending to buy smartphones within the next 90 days.

At the same time, support for the iPhone dropped from 32% to 28%, with Windows Mobile also dropping from 9% to 6%.

Additionally, support from the PalmOS dropped from 6% to 3%, with Research in Motion’s BlackBerry OS recording the only rise from 17% to 18%.
