Twitter hacked by Iranian protestors

A group known as the Iranian Cyber Army hacked social network Twitter over the weekend and replaced the site with an anti-American message, with all traffic to the site diverted for about two hours.

“This site has been hacked by the Iranian Cyber Army,” the message said. “USA think they are controlling and managing internet by their access, but they don’t, we control and manage internet by our power.”

The message was non-threatening, ending in a “wink” emoticon.

Tech blogs suggested Twitter users change their passwords if they use the same word for a number of sites, including other social networks such as Facebook. But Twitter soon took control of the site, saying on the official blog all operations had been restored.

“The motive for this attack appears to have been focused on defacing our site, not aimed at users — we don’t believe any accounts were compromised,” it said.
