How to search for the location of mobile phone towers in your suburb

Most mobile phone carriers have coverage maps on their websites. However, more often than not, these are online for marketing purposes rather than as accurate tools for determining how strong mobile signals are under real-life conditions.

If you need more detail, especially in a rural, regional, hilly or low-signal area, there’s another impartial source of information you can rely on.

ACMA – the Australian Communications and Media Authority – maintains the register of radiocommunications licences. This includes every Telstra, Optus and Vodafone/Hutchinson mobile phone tower location in the country.

Even better still, it has a search engine.

To use it, just follow this link. Then set ‘find’ to ‘sites’, ‘matches’ to ‘sounds like’ and enter the suburb name. You’ll get a full list of every base station in the suburb.
