A designer by the name of Gabriele Diamanti has created a ceramic solar-powered water distiller, which operates like an “upside-down coffee percolator”.
Diamanti created the device after becoming concerned about the lack of fresh water in the developing world.
He wanted a solution to desalinate water that was available to households rather than relying on giant, centralised plants.
He also wanted to create something inexpensive that could be made by local craftsmen. His device, the Eliodomestico, is designed to be used in coastal areas in developing nations.
Diamanti hopes local manufacturers will adopt the open-source design and mass-produce it for local populations.
Perhaps there’s an opportunity to do something similar, if not for developing nations then maybe campsites.
