ByteLight brings GPS indoors

start-up-byte-lightA Boston-based start-up called ByteLight has created indoor GPS technology, which can pinpoint your exact location within a building.

On its website, ByteLight says it is “fundamentally changing the value proposition for LED lighting”.

“Our technology enables value-added services which both increase the return on investment for venues and accelerate adoption for lighting manufacturers,” it says.

“Similar to outdoor GPS, ByteLight-enabled LED lights broadcast unique signals that can be received by most mobile devices.

“Using front or rear-facing cameras to receive the signals, the mobile device then computes its indoor position within one metre of accuracy, in less than a second.”

GPS is most commonly known for being used outdoors, so the ability to use it indoors will surely appeal to a wide range of consumers. Why not create some sort of indoor location-based service?
