Shed clothes – and memories – with The Divorcee Sale

First they get rid of the husband, then they get rid of the clothes.

The Divorcee Sale is a way for women to ditch possessions from their pre-split life while making a handy profit.

In an interview with Good Morning America, sale creator Jill Alexander said the idea behind the business is to free women from their former married selves.

“You go to these women’s homes and they have closets of Chanel bags they no longer need, gowns they no longer need… Life changes when you go through a divorce,” she said.

The barely-worn high-end items are collected then sold on at discounted prices to others who can make better use of them, adding to the popular trend of consignment shopping.

“One consigner who was previously married had 60 designer gowns,” Alexander said.

“Her life has completely changed and she no longer needs the gowns, and would rather get the money and buy things that she can wear for her new life.”

While the idea of making money from other people’s divorces might seem a little morbid, there certainly seems to be a market for selling off items from a former life.
