Pick your social media hunting ground

taskmasterAs an emerging entrepreneur, I almost guarantee that you are determined to use social media to drive your business to great heights.

And as an emerging entrepreneur, I almost guarantee that you will find doing this driving pretty hard. Social media might be free, but it does require a certain level of time commitment on behalf of the business owner. And time is the one thing that entrepreneurs can never get enough of.

My solution to this has been to direct my business towards two social media platforms, not every single one out there. For us, those two are Twitter and LinkedIn. For you, it might be different.

So how do you decide which social media hunting grounds to focus on?

A few days ago I went to a great presentation from Roy Morgan Research which contained some interesting facts about social media. According to the firm’s data, 67% of Australians are on Facebook, 12% are on LinkedIn, 11% are on Twitter and 16% are on the fast-growing Google+.

Does that mean you should immediately focus on Facebook? Not at all. If none of your customers are there, spending time establishing a presence will be useless.

Instead, do a straw poll of your customers and find out what social media platforms they actually use, when they use them and how they use them. See if you can narrow your focus down to two and then commit time to making those platforms work.
