SurfSET Fitness brings surfing inside

start-up-idea-indoor-surfboardIt seems surf’s up in the gym, with indoor “wave riding” workouts taking the fitness industry by storm.

Using surfboards mounted on inflatable bladders that mimic water, America’s SurfSET Fitness workout claims every 45-minute session burns 1,000 calories.

Soon available in homes, the RipSurfer X cultivates the traditionally lean, well-defined, surfer-type body.

SurfSET Fitness founder and chief executive Mike Hartwick developed the RipSurfer X and full workout program as a way to stay in shape after retiring from professional hockey in 2010.

Hartwick would train with heavy weights in the gym during the hockey season, and run away to the beaches of California to enjoy daily surf sets when the season ended.

“[When I stopped surfing,] I would quickly bulk up and lose the lean and toned physique that surfing gave me – no other workout could compare,” he says.

“Then it hit me. I’ll design a machine to mimic the workout that I got while surfing… SurfSET Fitness was born.”

As fitness centres scramble to stand out in the market, a concept such as surf-style training will definitely do well. What other sports could be brought into the gym?
