Be the best in the world

I was out for a drink with a friend recently who said something that really resonated with me.

His ex-wife, who is the CFO of a top investment firm in New York City has a rule: She will only ever deal with people who are the best in the world at what they do.

She reasons, that given this is New York City and the centre of the known universe, if you are not the best in the world at what you do, you are not worth her time.

You may be good, but not good enough.

If you are not the best in the world at what you do, there is someone else out there who is, and that’s who people are attracted to and who they want to deal with.

Her rule reminds me of the most successful people that have ever lived.

They have a definite plan combined with a burning desire to achieve their goal, and they pursue it relentlessly. They don’t settle, and they don’t give up.

So whatever craft you choose, your goal should be to become the best in the world.

Key takeaways:

  • Be the best in the world at what you do.
  • Don’t settle for average.
  • Don’t give up.
  • If you fail, learn from it and try again.
